North Korea Labels Binance Hack Accusations a Political Provocation

Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, has rejected FBI findings linking Pyongyang to a $6.3 billion Binance cryptocurrency heist. Dismissing the investigation as a grave political provocation, she accused Washington of attempting to damage North Korea’s reputation through what she characterized as absurd rhetoric.

North Korea Labels Binance Hack Accusations a Political Provocation

The FBI formally identified the hacking collective TraderTraitor as the entity responsible for the October 29 breach, urging global exchanges to block transactions associated with the group’s digital wallets. While the agency and several cybersecurity firms assert the involvement of North Korean-linked actors, Kim Yo Jong maintained that the allegations are a sinister effort to brand the DPRK as a global cyber-criminal state. She provided no alternative explanation for the theft but warned that Pyongyang is actively monitoring U.S. efforts to recover the stolen assets.

Blockchain analytics firm Elliptic reports the movement of funds through roughly 12,000 wallets across 11 different blockchains. While approximately $2.85 billion in stolen assets has been frozen or seized, roughly $3.24 billion remains in active addresses. Binance has moved to stabilize its operations, confirming that it has replenished 95% of the affected user funds using company reserves. The exchange began restoring withdrawal services on November 1, opting to absorb the financial impact of the breach rather than passing losses to its customer base.
