The proposal, slated for announcement at a Lubbock, Texas rally, targets the 2024 methane emissions standards that have drawn intense scrutiny from the American Petroleum Institute. By easing requirements for wells producing under 15 barrels per day, regulators hope to preserve the economic viability of thousands of small producers currently struggling under federal oversight.
Beyond marginal well relief, the Environmental Protection Agency intends to permanently scrap the Methane Super Emitter Program. This initiative previously empowered third-party groups to monitor and report large-scale methane leaks, a practice Administrator Lee Zeldin now characterizes as an unnecessary burden. Zeldin maintains that the 2024 rules are unworkable, arguing that reducing the regulatory load is essential to lowering energy costs for consumers and securing American energy dominance.
