India Shifts Crude Sourcing as Russian Price Advantage Fades

Indian Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri dismissed claims of American interference regarding Russian energy imports, asserting that New Delhi’s purchasing decisions remain guided by market economics rather than geopolitical pressure. As the cost of Russian crude climbs, refiners are pivoting back to Middle Eastern suppliers to maintain margins.

India Shifts Crude Sourcing as Russian Price Advantage Fades

While global observers have questioned the resilience of India's energy relationship with Moscow, Puri stated he has faced no direct pressure from Washington to restrict arrivals. Instead, the recent 14% decline in Russian oil imports—dropping to 1.8 million barrels per day in September—reflects a cooling of the price incentives that previously made Russian grades highly attractive. Competition from China has tightened the market for Russian barrels, narrowing the discount once enjoyed by Indian refiners.

The shift toward Middle Eastern producers is a calculated pivot toward better availability and more favorable pricing. September data shows imports from the region surged by 32% to 2.8 million barrels per day, the highest volume since February. As the cost of the flagship Urals grade reaches parity with Middle Eastern alternatives, Indian refiners are prioritizing logistical efficiency and cost-effectiveness. According to Puri, individual national interests remain the primary anchor for these commercial decisions, ensuring that India’s energy security is managed through market-driven procurement rather than external mandates.
