S&P Global Ratings debuts risk assessment framework for DeFi vaults

As crypto lending vaults swell to $10 billion in total deposits, S&P Global Ratings has introduced a specialized risk assessment framework. The new Vault Risk Assessment (VRA) aims to quantify impairment risks for investors, though the agency explicitly distinguishes these findings from traditional credit ratings.

The framework, launched on October 4, evaluates six distinct risk areas: portfolio credit quality, liquidity, curator influence, blockchain infrastructure, protocol security, and governance. While the system employs a familiar grading scale—with AAA(v) denoting the lowest risk—S&P emphasizes that the assessments do not measure expected yield or guarantee the safety of deposited assets. Instead, the methodology focuses on the technical and structural vulnerabilities inherent in blockchain-based lending.

S&P’s methodology treats these vaults as managed investment vehicles, where funds are deployed either through automated smart contracts or human-led strategies. By analyzing how these vaults manage collateral—including tokenized real-world assets—the agency intends to provide clarity in a sector that has grown from $1.5 billion in deposits in 2024 to $10 billion by September 2026. The firm has yet to publish individual vault grades, noting that initial assessments will arrive in subsequent updates. This initiative follows a broader expansion of S&P’s digital asset services, including recent moves to acquire the security firm OpenZeppelin and provide stablecoin stability scores.
