China Poised to Overtake US as Global Nuclear Power Leader

Damien Ma, lead analyst at Gavekal Technologies, projects that China will maintain the most dynamic nuclear industry globally for the next decade. The contrast in execution is stark: China can complete a new plant in approximately six years, whereas the United States took over a decade to finish the long-delayed Plant Vogtle in Georgia. Over the last ten years, China has successfully added 34 gigawatts of capacity, while the US has brought only one new facility online.

Beijing’s strategy centers on becoming an "electrostate," utilizing nuclear power not just for energy security, but as a pillar of technological innovation. This includes a vertically integrated ecosystem that spans thorium breeding and supercritical CO2 generation. Despite historical secrecy, China recently signed an agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency to share expertise on high-temperature gas-cooled reactors (HTGRs). This collaboration on research, design, and supply chain management offers a potential lifeline for nations struggling to balance climate goals with the surging energy demands of artificial intelligence.
