The survey of 23,000 respondents highlights a clear hierarchy of preferences: 52% of participants identified solar as the primary alternative energy source, while 37% supported wind power. Nuclear energy trailed significantly, with only 19% of respondents viewing it as a top priority. EIB Group President Nadia Calvino described the shift as a necessary move to stabilize energy costs for households and businesses amid a volatile geopolitical climate.
However, the economic reality remains a subject of intense debate. Historical data since the Paris Agreement shows that EU nations with the heaviest investment in renewables experienced the sharpest electricity price increases, while those maintaining traditional energy sources kept bills more stable. Critics argue that standard levelized cost metrics for renewables often omit the hidden expenses of maintaining baseload capacity during periods of low wind or solar production. Despite these concerns, mounting geopolitical instability continues to drive the push for locally sourced energy.
