The Candidates to Succeed Christine Lagarde at the ECB

France is reportedly weighing a maneuver to install former Dutch central banker Klaas Knot as the next European Central Bank president. The potential succession plan, which would involve a trade-off for a French chief economist, comes as speculation mounts regarding an early exit for Christine Lagarde before her 2027 term expires.

The Candidates to Succeed Christine Lagarde at the ECB

Klaas Knot, 59, brings a decade and a half of Governing Council experience to the table. A pragmatic hawk, he transitioned from a vocal critic of Mario Draghi’s massive stimulus programs to a reliable ally under Lagarde. His resume includes chairing the Financial Stability Board, positioning him as a seasoned hand in navigating market volatility.

Contrasting this approach is Pablo Hernandez de Cos, 55, currently leading the Bank for International Settlements. Known as a moderate dove, de Cos earned a reputation for evidence-based policymaking during his tenure at the Bank of Spain. Colleagues characterize him as a consensus-builder who avoids ideological traps, a trait that proved vital when he coordinated international support for the U.S. Federal Reserve.

Joachim Nagel, the 60-year-old head of the Bundesbank, represents a shift in German institutional strategy. Unlike his predecessor, who engaged in frequent public clashes with the ECB, Nagel has pursued a policy of pragmatic compromise. While he maintains a hawkish stance on inflation, he has notably broken with Berlin’s traditional opposition to the European Deposit Insurance Scheme.

Finally, the name of Nadia Calvino, President of the European Investment Bank, persists in diplomatic circles. Although she lacks a background in monetary economics, her experience as a Spanish cabinet minister and her reputation as an effective organizational manager are viewed as key assets for steering a disparate Governing Council. Her candidacy also gains weight from the current lack of gender diversity within the bank’s top leadership.
