Tether Reserves Surge to $8 Billion Cushion After Record Profit

With a $1.5 billion operating profit for the third quarter, Tether has nearly doubled its excess reserve buffer to $7.95 billion. The stablecoin issuer now holds $104.34 in assets for every $100 of liabilities, signaling a significant strengthening of its balance sheet following a leaner second quarter.

Tether Reserves Surge to $8 Billion Cushion After Record Profit

The company’s total reserve assets climbed to $191.45 billion by the end of September, while total liabilities remained stable at $183.50 billion. This expansion in the reserve cushion occurred despite USDT issuance holding steady, providing a more robust safety net against market volatility. CEO Paolo Ardoino emphasized that the primary focus remains maintaining liquidity for redemptions and securing the infrastructure backing the dollar-linked tokens.

U.S. Treasury bills continue to dominate the firm's asset allocation, accounting for $132.4 billion in holdings. Beyond traditional debt, Tether has increased its exposure to alternative assets, reporting $19.08 billion in physical gold and $8.37 billion in Bitcoin. These two categories now represent roughly 14.3% of the total reserve portfolio. While the nine-month operating profit reached $4.5 billion, the company distinguishes this figure from its total financial result, which reconciles to $7.95 billion in total equity following capital outflows. The financial data, verified by BDO, confirms that Tether’s reserve strategy is heavily tilted toward short-term, liquid instruments, with the weighted average maturity of its Treasury bills staying under 90 days.
