Chevron Eyes Global LNG Expansion to Bypass Supply Chokepoints

Geopolitical instability in the Middle East is forcing a radical shift in energy logistics, prompting Chevron to scout new liquefied natural gas projects across four continents. Freeman Shaheen, the company’s president of global gas, confirmed the strategy aims to secure diversified supply routes to insulate customers from regional volatility.

Chevron Eyes Global LNG Expansion to Bypass Supply Chokepoints

The energy crisis, ignited by conflicts that threatened transit lanes from Qatar and the UAE, has fundamentally altered how buyers view security. Chevron is responding by aggressively widening its portfolio. In Argentina, the company is deepening its presence in the Vaca Muerta shale play, while simultaneously securing exploration blocks offshore Greece and Cyprus to build a foothold in the Mediterranean.

Africa and Australia remain central to this push. Chevron already commands two major Australian assets—Gorgon and Wheatstone—which currently account for 5% of global LNG supply. Beyond established infrastructure, the company is intensifying exploration efforts in Angola, evidenced by a recent discovery in Block 0 that taps into over 2,000 feet of hydrocarbons. By spreading production across these disparate regions, the supermajor intends to eliminate reliance on singular maritime chokepoints, offering clients a flexible, multi-regional supply chain that persists even when specific global corridors are compromised.
