Bank of Korea Warns AI Chip Exposure Risks Market Stability

The Bank of Korea has issued a sharp warning regarding the heavy concentration of leveraged trades tied to Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, signaling that any cooling in the global AI chip sector could trigger significant volatility across domestic and international financial markets.

Bank of Korea Warns AI Chip Exposure Risks Market Stability

Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix currently command nearly half of the Kospi’s total market capitalization, a dominance that ties the nation’s financial health directly to global AI infrastructure spending. The central bank highlighted that overseas leverage has surged, with Hong Kong-listed products linked to these chipmakers expanding more than twentyfold during the first half of 2026. These instruments often employ derivatives to amplify daily returns, forcing fund operators into rebalancing cycles that can inadvertently accelerate price swings in Seoul.

While the central bank stopped short of announcing immediate enforcement, it noted that such rapid adjustments risk transmitting instability between offshore trading venues and domestic exchanges. South Korean authorities have already moved to address these vulnerabilities, proposing caps on individual allocations to leveraged single-stock ETFs. These concerns arrive as the nation’s economy navigates a complex period of growth; while nominal output has soared due to high chip export prices, the Bank of Korea maintains a more measured view of real economic expansion, recently lifting its full-year growth forecast to 2.6%. Policymakers now face the dual challenge of managing inflation and household debt while monitoring the potential for a reversal in the AI investment cycle that currently sustains the country’s industrial output.
