Israel Strikes Syrian Airbase to Block Turkish Military Footprint

Israeli warplanes struck the Abu al-Duhur airbase on Tuesday, signaling a forceful attempt to veto the expansion of Turkish military influence in Syria. The operation targeted the facility as it underwent Turkish-backed renovations, heightening regional tensions and risking an accidental aerial clash between two of the Middle East’s most potent militaries.

Israel Strikes Syrian Airbase to Block Turkish Military Footprint

The strike on Abu al-Duhur, located 70 kilometers from the Turkish border, followed intelligence reports suggesting Damascus intended to grant Ankara permanent access to the site. Having remained largely dormant for over a decade, the base recently became a focal point for Turkish engineers and military trainers working under agreements with the government of Ahmed al-Sharaa. Israel views this deeper penetration into northwestern Syria as a direct threat to its security perimeter, prompting the preemptive bombardment to halt the base’s reactivation.

Ankara received no prior warning of the operation. Israeli jets flew northward toward the Turkish border, a maneuver that briefly triggered alarm in Washington over the potential for a direct confrontation between Israeli and Turkish fighters. While Israel maintains that its actions were necessary to preserve the existing security status quo, the strike underscores a growing geopolitical friction. Ankara is aggressively rebuilding Syrian military infrastructure, and Israel is signaling that it will use kinetic force to prevent these newfound partnerships from cementing a permanent Turkish military presence near its own borders.
