NASA Blockade Stalls Massive Nevada Tungsten Discovery

A potential $152 billion tungsten find in Nevada’s Great Basin Desert has hit a federal wall, as NASA moves to block development on the site. The agency claims mining operations would interfere with critical satellite signal tracking, complicating U.S. efforts to break China's grip on the global supply chain.

NASA Blockade Stalls Massive Nevada Tungsten Discovery

The discovery by 3 Proton Lithium, estimated at 1.78 million tons, represents the largest potential tungsten reserve in the United States. While the company’s CEO, Kevin Moore, frames the project as a vital national security asset, the standoff underscores the friction between domestic resource extraction and existing federal infrastructure. China currently controls 80% of the global tungsten market, and recent export curbs have triggered a 600% price surge, fueling urgent demand for domestic alternatives.

Washington has spent roughly $46 billion over the last five years attempting to secure critical mineral supplies, often outbidding international allies in the process. Despite this aggressive spending, the Nevada site—which would be five times larger than any other U.S. tungsten deposit—remains trapped in bureaucratic limbo. While the discovery’s commercial viability is not yet proven, the project highlights the high-stakes trade-off between the administration’s goal of supply chain independence and the practical limitations of land use for defense and scientific operations.
