David Schwartz proposes Bitcoin inheritance via shared hardware access

The proposed setup involves loading an identical 24-word recovery phrase onto two separate cold storage devices. The owner then assigns one device to each of two relatives, while providing the shared PIN to two different trusted friends. Under this model, neither a relative nor a friend possesses enough information to access the funds independently, requiring coordination between the two parties to unlock the wallet.

This approach differs significantly from multisignature systems, which utilize distinct keys to require multiple signatures for a single transaction. Because Schwartz’s method relies on a single recovery phrase, any relative and friend working in collusion could gain full control over the assets. The design is intended as a conceptual framework rather than a commercial product, and it carries inherent risks if any of the participants become unreachable or if the initial seed generation was compromised.

Discussions regarding the plan surfaced alongside concerns about hardware security, specifically following reports of a firmware flaw in Coldcard devices that potentially weakened seed randomness. While Coinkite has released patches, the incident highlighted the necessity of secure seed generation before attempting any backup or inheritance strategy. Security experts note that while physical distribution of credentials can mitigate theft, a robust inheritance plan must also incorporate legal documentation and clear instructions for executors, as technical access alone does not guarantee a successful transfer of assets.
