Chevron Shifts Strategy with 50% Hike in Exploration Budget

Chevron is aggressively pivoting toward frontier exploration, increasing its annual spending by 50% to move beyond its traditional U.S. strongholds. Under the direction of vice president Kevin McLachlan, the energy giant aims to rebuild its global reserves by targeting high-impact basins across South America, Africa, and the Eastern Mediterranean.

Chevron Shifts Strategy with 50% Hike in Exploration Budget

The company’s capital allocation for exploration is set to exceed $1.5 billion this year, a sharp climb from just under $1 billion in 2025. This financial shift reflects a broader corporate strategy to mitigate geopolitical risk and diversify a portfolio that had become too concentrated in the Permian Basin and the Gulf of Mexico. McLachlan, who joined the firm from TotalEnergies, is overseeing a rapid expansion of exploration acreage, which has grown by 35% over the past twelve months.

Operational activity is accelerating in tandem with the budget increase. Chevron plans to drill 20 exploration wells throughout 2027, effectively doubling the pace of its efforts from two years ago. Roughly half of the current exploration budget is now dedicated to undeveloped frontier basins, compared to just 20% only a few years prior. Recent successes in Nigeria and Angola have bolstered CEO Mike Wirth’s confidence in the firm’s current trajectory, as he recently noted the company possesses its deepest inventory of opportunities in years. Upcoming projects include the Nabba-1X well in Namibia, a critical test for the company's renewed high-impact exploration program.
