Houthi Strike Knocks 400,000 Bpd Jazan Refinery Offline

A plume of black smoke rising over the Red Sea coast marked a sharp escalation in regional energy warfare as a Houthi drone strike forced the immediate shutdown of Saudi Aramco’s 400,000-barrel-per-day Jazan refinery. The facility, a critical node in Saudi processing capacity, remains offline following the July 27 attack.

According to an IIR note, the strike inflicted damage on the refinery’s Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle complex and its adjacent tank farm. While initial projections suggest repairs might wrap up by August 15, the timeline remains speculative. Saudi Aramco has maintained silence regarding the extent of the damage or a firm restart schedule.

This loss of capacity hits a global fuel market already strained by thin inventories and record-high refining margins. Unlike crude oil, which can be rerouted or stored on tankers to bypass regional bottlenecks, finished fuels require operational refineries to exist. With Jazan dark, 400,000 barrels of daily output are effectively erased from the supply chain.

The strike also signals a tactical shift in the conflict. Yanbu, a port Saudi Arabia has utilized to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, was reportedly targeted as well. By shifting the focus of attacks toward the Red Sea, the Houthi movement is challenging the very workarounds that have kept energy flows stable for months. While Russia recently reported the restart of several domestic refineries, the global fuel market remains fragile. In the current climate, supply chain detours are failing to compensate for the sudden loss of primary processing infrastructure.
