Russian government weighs rescue package for fire-hit Wildberries

Ukrainian drone strikes have crippled Russia’s largest online retailer, destroying 10% of its storage capacity and leaving thousands of small businesses in financial ruin. As the company struggles to process losses, the Kremlin and state-backed lender VTB are exploring emergency measures to prevent a broader market collapse.

Russian government weighs rescue package for fire-hit Wildberries

The destruction of seven warehouses has forced Wildberries into a precarious position, with CEO Tatyana Kim now engaged in high-level talks with authorities regarding potential tax breaks and credit relief. While the government has yet to finalize a support package, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov signaled a positive tone, publicly commending the retailer for its voluntary commitment to compensate affected sellers despite the lack of a legal mandate.

For many vendors, however, the damage is already existential. Independent sellers report millions of rubles in lost inventory, with some describing the current compensation offers as inadequate. The situation has intensified pressure on VTB, which recently acquired a stake in the retailer’s financial arm. VTB’s first deputy CEO, Dmitry Pyanov, confirmed the bank is open to providing lending support should a formal request arrive, though investors reacted with caution, pushing VTB shares down 2.5% on Tuesday.

Ukraine has openly identified Wildberries as a strategic target, citing both its logistics role in supporting the Russian army and its growing integration with the state banking sector. With 830 billion rubles in reported debt and a massive network of small-scale entrepreneurs dependent on its platform, the retailer’s stability has become a critical concern for state planners looking to shield the economy from the fallout of the ongoing conflict.
