Anatoly Yakovenko: Phishing poses the gravest threat to crypto security

Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko argues that human deception, rather than quantum computing or mathematical vulnerabilities, remains the primary danger for digital asset holders. He advocates for a defensive hardware strategy involving dedicated iOS devices in Lockdown Mode and multisignature wallets to mitigate the risks of social engineering and credential theft.

The warning arrives as high-profile security breaches continue to rattle the industry. Binance recently disclosed a complex intrusion involving fake job interviews and compromised developer software, which allowed attackers to access wallet signing systems. Meanwhile, Mercado Bitcoin halted operations following a separate breach, prompting Tether to freeze 4.5 million USDT linked to the incident. These events highlight a shift toward sophisticated, human-centric attack vectors.

Data from Chainalysis underscores the scale of the problem, recording $713 million in personal wallet theft across 2025, impacting at least 80,000 victims. While Solana recorded the highest number of individual victims, the firm noted that Ethereum and Tron faced higher relative victimization rates. Yakovenko suggests that users move beyond basic security by utilizing Apple’s Lockdown Mode, which restricts web technologies and attachment types to minimize the device’s attack surface. Combined with a multisignature wallet—which mandates multiple approvals for any transaction—this layered approach aims to eliminate single points of failure that attackers frequently exploit.
