Gold Price Trends Following U.S. Midterm Elections

As Americans head to the polls, investors are examining historical patterns to gauge how precious metals might perform in the year ahead. Since 1974, gold prices have risen in eight of the 13 midterm election cycles, yielding an average increase of 14% by the following November.

The volatility within these cycles remains significant. While the median gain sits at 15%, actual outcomes have fluctuated between a 22% decline and a 90% surge. The most dramatic instance occurred after the 1978 midterms, where gold prices climbed from $206 to $392 an ounce, driven by the second oil shock and the Iranian revolution. Conversely, the 1974 cycle marked the beginning of a bear market, with prices dropping 22% as the economy grappled with the fallout of ending dollar convertibility.

Silver has shown a similar, albeit more erratic, performance, rising in nine of the 13 cycles with an average gain of 20%. However, historical data suggests that shifts in Congressional control are not reliable indicators of future price action. Gold averaged a 15% increase when the balance of power shifted, compared to an 11% gain when the status quo was maintained. Ultimately, these figures provide a record of past price behavior rather than a causal link to election results. With only 13 observations since 1974, the sample size is too narrow to establish a dependable market pattern for the current cycle.
