Oil Markets Tread Carefully Ahead of U.S. Election Volatility

With the U.S. midterm elections approaching on November 3, oil traders are bracing for a potential surge in Middle East hostilities. President Trump’s repeated suggestions of renewed action against Iran have injected a significant risk premium into current pricing, creating a market atmosphere defined by extreme sensitivity to political rhetoric.

Oil Markets Tread Carefully Ahead of U.S. Election Volatility

ING commodity strategists Warren Patterson and Ewa Manthey suggest that if the post-election period passes without renewed strikes on Iran, the market’s current risk premium will likely begin to erode, forcing prices downward. This shift may occur even in the absence of a formal diplomatic breakthrough between Washington and Tehran. However, the market remains trapped in a state of confusion; while reports of oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz reaching pre-war levels initially pressured prices, these gains were quickly neutralized by record-high tanker attacks this month, signaling that the Persian Gulf remains far from stable.

Contrasting with the uncertainty in crude, diesel markets have already begun to soften. Despite skepticism regarding the impact of Russian diesel imports to the U.S., the ICE gasoil crack spread has retreated to $70 per barrel. This marks the lowest level since early October, signaling a cooling trend from the record highs seen during recent global supply disruptions.
