Ethereum Foundation pushes for default wallet privacy via Kohaku SDK

The Ethereum Foundation is championing a shift toward default privacy in crypto wallets, arguing that shielding onchain history is essential to thwarting malicious actors. By backing the Kohaku software development kit, the organization aims to integrate protocols like Railgun, Privacy Pools, and Tornado Cash directly into user interfaces.

Jordan Enev, a key figure in the Kohaku project, recently urged wallet developers to adopt the SDK to normalize privacy features across the ecosystem. Ambire Wallet has spent the last several months testing these integrations, providing feedback to refine the kit’s standardized interface for shielded-pool protocols. While the project remains in active development with some unaudited components, its trajectory signals a move to obscure user transaction patterns from third-party observers.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and researcher Nicolas Consigny are set to demonstrate these capabilities at Devcon on November 3. The presentation will feature a live mainnet demonstration using Ambire, showcasing how embedded privacy protocols and light clients can reduce user reliance on external infrastructure. Beyond privacy, the Kohaku roadmap includes post-quantum account protection and decentralized methods for fetching token data to prevent metadata leakage. This initiative builds on the Foundation’s broader 2025 privacy commitment, which established a dedicated task force to reconcile regulatory compliance with technical anonymity.
