European Gas Prices Surge to Two-Year Highs Amid Middle East Tensions

Saudi Arabia’s decision to shutter its vital East-West oil pipeline has sent shockwaves through energy markets, pushing European benchmark gas prices up 6% on Monday. The Dutch TTF hub hit 84.275 euros per megawatt-hour, marking the highest valuation since the supply crisis of early 2023.

European Gas Prices Surge to Two-Year Highs Amid Middle East Tensions

The rally follows five consecutive weeks of gains, fueled by mounting fears that escalating conflict in the Middle East will further choke global energy supplies. Europe enters the winter season in a precarious position, with storage facilities holding less than 70% of capacity—well below the five-year average of 80%. This shortfall is compounded by a simultaneous decline in LNG shipments from Qatar, forcing European buyers into a fierce bidding war with Asian markets.

Ole Hansen, head of commodity strategy at Saxo Bank, noted that the disruption has forced international buyers to compete aggressively for alternative cargoes, pushing prices above the threshold of 140 USD per barrel equivalent. As cold weather approaches, analysts at Kpler warn that the global fight for fuel is likely to intensify, leaving little room for error in a market already reeling from the loss of reliable pipeline infrastructure.
