Ethereum Foundation sets 2029 deadline for quantum-resistant network

The Ethereum Foundation has formally committed to making the network’s base layer resistant to quantum computing attacks by December 2029. This aggressive timeline, confirmed by protocol coordination lead Fredrik Svantes, now serves as a primary filter for evaluating all pending network upgrades and long-term research priorities.

The commitment emerges as the Protocol Cluster evaluates 62 Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) for the upcoming Hegotá upgrade. Nine teams comprising roughly 60 researchers and engineers recently submitted 397 individual ratings to gauge the technical viability and priority of these changes. While these ratings offer a roadmap for development, they do not guarantee mainnet inclusion; the process remains subject to rigorous testing across devnets and public testnets before any activation date is finalized.

Transitioning to post-quantum cryptography

Ethereum currently relies on cryptographic methods vulnerable to future quantum machines, though existing hardware remains insufficient for such threats. The transition involves a massive overhaul of validator signatures, data availability, and zero-knowledge proof systems. Current experiments, such as SPHINCS-based signature logic for smart contract accounts, offer interim protection, but the 2029 goal necessitates fundamental changes to the consensus layer and validator deposit contracts to support variable-length public keys.

The foundation’s timeline aligns with broader shifts in digital infrastructure, notably the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) recent approval of post-quantum security standards. While the Ethereum deadline is not a regulatory mandate for investors or custodians, it provides a technical benchmark for American infrastructure providers navigating the transition. The Protocol Cluster plans to address the complexities of these rankings and the broader quantum strategy during a Reddit AMA session scheduled for September 16.
