Oil Markets Defy Sanctions as Hormuz Transit Risks Intensify

Global oil prices are holding steady near $90 per barrel despite the Trump administration’s implementation of what it terms the toughest sanctions in history against Iran. With diplomatic mediation efforts stalling, the market remains fixated on the volatile status of the Strait of Hormuz, the world’s most critical maritime energy artery.

Oil Markets Defy Sanctions as Hormuz Transit Risks Intensify

The failure of Qatari and Pakistani intermediaries to bridge the divide between Washington and Tehran has left energy markets in a state of precarious equilibrium. Following President Trump’s rejection of the June Memorandum of Understanding, the flow of crude through Hormuz has become the primary driver of price volatility. While Iran and Oman continue to negotiate a potential temporary shipping corridor, Tehran maintains that the waterway will remain effectively shuttered until sanctions are lifted and compensation is secured.

Energy infrastructure elsewhere is showing signs of strain as the ripple effects of the crisis spread. Saudi Aramco has begun bypassing the Strait, recently moving at least 4 million barrels of Arab Medium and Heavy crude to PetroChina via alternative routes. Meanwhile, European markets are grappling with a diesel crisis that has seen prices surge 70% since the conflict began, prompting a coalition of six EU nations to pursue a windfall profit tax. In the UK, the escalating cost of natural gas is forcing the household energy price cap to £1,723 starting in October, a move expected to deepen domestic energy debt significantly by year-end.
