Tokenized Deposits Could Drain $580 Billion in U.S. Bank Lending Capacity

A 10% reduction in the average lifespan of bank deposits due to tokenization could strip $580 billion from the U.S. banking system’s ability to fund long-term loans. New research from the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas highlights how faster, programmable money may fundamentally alter the traditional maturity transformation model.

Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas economists Rosie Levy and Srini Ramaswamy argue that the shift toward tokenized deposits threatens to shorten the duration that customer funds remain on bank balance sheets. Because banks typically rely on the stability of these deposits to finance long-term, fixed-rate loans, any increase in deposit volatility forces institutions to hold more liquid assets like U.S. Treasuries, effectively reducing their capacity to provide credit.

The researchers utilized Federal Reserve H.8 data to model the impact of this shift, estimating that roughly $5.8 trillion of the banking sector’s duration risk is currently supported by the relative stickiness of deposits. If tokenization makes these funds more sensitive to interest rate fluctuations or allows for instant, automated transfers via smart contracts, banks would face a stark choice: increase reliance on more expensive wholesale debt or curtail long-term lending activities. This transition could inadvertently raise credit costs for businesses and consumers.

While major financial institutions—including JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, and Wells Fargo—are actively developing shared tokenized networks to modernize treasury operations, the potential for increased deposit volatility remains a significant regulatory concern. Analysts point to Brazil’s Pix instant payment system as a precursor, where rapid, round-the-clock liquidity needs eventually pushed banks to prioritize government bonds over traditional credit intermediation. As infrastructure projects like Project Agorá and SWIFT’s blockchain ledger move toward deployment, the fundamental mechanics of how banks manage liquidity and risk are likely to undergo a quiet, yet systemic, transformation.
