Jeonbuk Bank Debuts Bitcoin-Collateralized Business Loans

South Korea’s Jeonbuk Bank has launched the nation’s first bank-issued won loans backed by Bitcoin, marking a significant shift in institutional adoption. The service allows corporate borrowers to secure business financing using digital assets as collateral while relying on third-party custodians to manage the underlying cryptocurrency holdings.

The subsidiary of JB Financial Group currently limits the offering to corporate clients, specifically targeting those in need of operating funds. Rather than taking direct custody of the Bitcoin, the bank utilizes registered digital asset service providers to hold the pledged collateral. This structure ensures the lender remains within the bounds of existing financial regulations, delegating the technical management of the assets to entities compliant with South Korea’s Virtual Asset User Protection Act.

To mitigate the inherent volatility of the crypto market, the bank implemented a proprietary valuation system. This framework calculates collateral values by synthesizing price data from multiple global exchanges alongside median market volatility measures. This approach aims to shield the bank from localized price manipulation or exchange-specific disruptions. Internal stress tests conducted by the bank indicate that Bitcoin’s liquidity and market capitalization provide a stable enough foundation for this collateral model, even during significant price swings.

Legal recourse for the bank was bolstered by amendments to South Korea’s civil enforcement rules that took effect on October 1. These changes allow the lender to recover unpaid debts through court-supervised liquidation of the pledged assets. According to Jung Sang-hoon, vice president of the bank’s digital division, the product is designed to integrate digital assets into traditional banking systems without requiring the lender to assume direct ownership. Moving forward, the bank intends to monitor market demand and regulatory evolution to determine if the program should expand to include additional digital assets or consumer-facing services.
