Bitget Targets Bhutan Expansion With Gelephu Mindfulness City Deal

Bitget has signed a cooperation agreement with Bhutan’s Gelephu Mindfulness City Authority to establish a local presence and pursue a Financial Services Licence. The deal marks a shift in the exchange’s global strategy, focusing on building a regulated ecosystem within the Himalayan nation's emerging special administrative region.

Bitget Targets Bhutan Expansion With Gelephu Mindfulness City Deal

Under the new framework, Bitget intends to set up a legal entity in Gelephu to support local operations, talent development, and knowledge transfer. The company will work directly with the Gelephu Financial Services Office to secure the necessary authorizations required by the Financial Services Act 2025. Gracy Chen, chief executive officer of Bitget, highlighted Bhutan’s commitment to renewable energy and long-term regulatory planning as key factors in the decision to enter the market.

This move contrasts with Bitget's recent retrenchment in other territories. While the exchange is actively pursuing registrations in New Zealand and preparing for a potential U.S. launch, it recently withdrew services from Japan following repeated warnings from local regulators regarding unregistered operations. By embedding itself in Bhutan’s specialized economic zone, Bitget aims to align its infrastructure with the country's broader digital asset strategy, which leverages surplus hydropower to power mining and financial innovation.
