Privacy Cash suspends deposits after $1.2M in hack-linked inflows

Following the $6.34 billion Binance hack, Privacy Cash has halted all incoming deposits to fortify its wallet-screening protocols. Investigators traced approximately $1.2 million in stolen Ethereum and Solana into the privacy protocol, prompting the team to intervene in an effort to prevent the platform from becoming a conduit for illicit funds.

The protocol announced the suspension on November 4, emphasizing that its core mission remains providing financial privacy for legitimate users rather than enabling criminal activity. While deposits are currently disabled, the project confirmed that existing users retain full access to their funds for withdrawals. No timeline for resuming deposit functionality has been provided as the development team works to enhance its existing CipherOwl-based screening system.

Blockchain analytics firm Elliptic identified the movement of assets into the protocol, tracking roughly 41 ETH and nearly 12,000 SOL linked to the Binance breach. These inflows highlight the persistent challenge of managing illicit activity within anonymity-focused tools. Although Privacy Cash documentation claims that addresses flagged as malicious are typically rejected, the recent surge of theft-linked tokens suggests significant gaps in the current defense mechanisms. Meanwhile, Binance has moved to replenish nearly 98% of the stolen assets, though the recovery of the remaining funds continues to be a primary focus for federal investigators, including the FBI.
