Koloma, a startup backed by high-profile investors including Bill Gates and Amazon, has identified the Philippines as the premier site for exploration. CEO Pete Johnson confirmed that while the company has verified high-purity hydrogen gas at the surface, commercial-scale operations remain years away. The firm is currently focused on mapping the scale of these underground accumulations rather than rushing into premature extraction. For the Philippines, a nation rapidly modernizing its economy and heavily reliant on imported diesel, the successful development of these reserves would offer both energy independence and a massive economic advantage.
