BIP-110 fails to reach voluntary miner support threshold

Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 110 has fallen short of the 55% voluntary miner support required for its current difficulty period. With only 28 signaling blocks recorded out of 1,108, Strategy Executive Chairman Michael Saylor declared the threshold mathematically unreachable, dismissing the current participation as insufficient for genuine network consensus.

BIP-110 fails to reach voluntary miner support threshold

The proposal, known as the Reduced Data Temporary Softfork, aims to impose seven temporary restrictions on Bitcoin transaction data, including caps on output scripts and OP_RETURN sizes. Saylor noted that the limited support identified so far stems exclusively from miners using the DATUM system to share rewards through the OCEAN pool. While supporters argue the rules will curb arbitrary data storage, critics maintain that consensus protocols should not dictate which transaction structures are permitted.

Attention now shifts to the mandatory signaling phase, which begins at block 961,632. During this window, nodes enforcing the protocol are programmed to reject any block that fails to signal for the update. Saylor and other industry figures, including Blockstream co-founder Adam Back, have cautioned that attempting to enforce these rules without broad agreement risks splitting the Bitcoin network. As the voluntary period concludes, the industry awaits a clearer signal from major mining pools and node operators regarding their stance on the controversial changes.
