Europe faces a mounting energy security threat as renewable generation outpaces the continent’s ability to store power. While the European Union aims to triple its storage capacity to 200 GW by 2030, the current reliance on lithium-ion technology presents significant geopolitical and functional risks. These batteries are primarily effective for short-duration storage—typically capped at four hours—and their supply chains are heavily concentrated in China, mirroring the fossil fuel dependencies the bloc is attempting to escape.
The sand battery, developed by Polar Night Energy for the utility Loviisan Lämpö, offers a different path. While less efficient than lithium-ion, the system acts as a thermal reservoir capable of meeting the town’s heating needs for a month in summer and up to a week in winter. By replacing traditional heating network infrastructure, the technology has already slashed local greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 70 percent. CEO Tommi Eronen views this as a necessary shift toward decentralized energy management, where simple, non-chemical storage models can fill the gaps left by intermittent solar and wind production.
