The valuation surfaced during SBI’s first-quarter earnings presentation, where the firm described its crypto asset division as currently stagnant. Management attributed this cooling activity to regulatory uncertainty in the United States, specifically the pending CLARITY Act. This proposed legislation aims to delineate oversight responsibilities between the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, a distinction SBI views as vital for future market stability.
While the crypto division posted a 1.4 billion yen pretax loss, the broader SBI group reported record-breaking performance. Net profit surged 149.9% year-over-year to 148.1 billion yen, supported by the continued profitability of its market-making subsidiary, B2C2. Diversification remains a priority as the firm pivots beyond its established Ripple ties. Recent initiatives include the rebranding of its security subsidiary into SBI Digital Practice Co. Ltd. to focus on the institutional Canton Network and the launch of a 3 billion yen crypto fund in partnership with game developer Gumi.
These maneuvers signal that SBI is aggressively expanding its digital asset footprint through lending, stablecoin services, and the pending acquisition of Bitbank. By broadening its exposure to include Bitcoin and major altcoins, the group aims to insulate its digital asset strategy from the volatility associated with individual tokens like XRP.
