Diplomatic Push to Revive US-Iran Maritime Accord

A coalition of regional mediators is pressing for a breakthrough on the stalled US-Iran memorandum of understanding, even as Tehran publicly rejects the notion of renewed talks. The proposal seeks to resolve a volatile dispute over transit authority in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for global energy markets.

Diplomatic Push to Revive US-Iran Maritime Accord

Pakistan, Egypt, and Qatar are spearheading the latest mediation effort, aiming to reconcile conflicting interpretations of the existing framework before its 60-day expiration next month. The current impasse centers on control of the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran demands greater authority over shipping lanes, a position Washington continues to contest. While reports indicate that Tehran and Oman have signaled approval for a revised proposal, a final decision awaits word from the White House following the recent meeting between Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu.

Tehran’s official stance remains defiant, with Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi explicitly denying any request for negotiations with Washington. Gharibabadi instead characterized recent diplomatic overtures as American attempts to secure dialogue through Omani intermediaries. Despite these denials, energy markets have reacted to the potential for de-escalation; Brent crude dropped 4.8% to $84.09 per barrel on Tuesday. The stability of these prices rests on whether the current pause in hostilities matures into a formal agreement or dissolves under the weight of unresolved maritime security claims.
