CME Group gold futures draw $60 million in inaugural 24/7 weekend

Investors traded 15,000 one-ounce futures contracts during the first weekend of around-the-clock trading, signaling a shift in how retail participants manage exposure to precious metals. The inaugural session generated approximately $60 million in notional value, confirming market appetite for smaller, regulated products outside traditional business hours.

Jin Hennig, Managing Director and Global Head of Metals at CME Group, noted that the launch underscores a readiness among retail traders for accessible, always-on instruments. The one-ounce contract, introduced in January 2025, was engineered specifically to bridge the gap for smaller market participants. This weekend activity arrives alongside a broader surge in interest for gold derivatives, as global geopolitical instability continues to drive volume.

The exchange reported record-breaking performance for the first half of 2026, with an average daily notional value of $125 billion across its gold futures suite. Total daily volume for the metals business reached 1.3 million contracts, a 55% increase compared to the previous year. This consistent growth reflects a sustained institutional and retail pivot toward hedging strategies in a volatile economic environment.
