Tata Power Eyes 2032 Launch for Private Nuclear Plant

India is clearing the path for private capital in its nuclear sector, with Tata Power CEO Praveer Sinha confirming plans to bring the nation's first private nuclear facility online by 2032. The move follows recent legislative shifts designed to break the state-run monopoly on atomic energy production.

Construction on the project is slated to begin by early 2028, according to Sinha, who noted that the company has already narrowed down potential sites across three Indian states. This initiative falls under the newly enacted SHANTI Act, which officially permits private investment in nuclear energy to help the country meet an ambitious target of 100 gigawatts of installed capacity by 2047. Currently, India operates at only 8.8 gigawatts, necessitating a massive capital injection estimated at 19.28 trillion rupees.

While Tata Power moves to enter the space, the state-owned NTPC Ltd remains a dominant force, expected to capture 30% of new capacity installations. NTPC is already pivoting toward global uranium asset acquisition to secure fuel supplies for the planned expansion. Alongside these private and state utility efforts, the government is also pushing for the domestic development of five small modular reactors by 2033 to further diversify the national grid.
