Strategy’s STRC preferred stock gains institutional favor despite price lag

Strategy’s STRC preferred stock has emerged as the primary holding across three major U.S. ETFs, with institutional portfolios absorbing $756 million in assets. Despite this surge in professional interest, the security continues to trade roughly 13% below its $100 target, complicating the company’s plans to leverage the stock for further Bitcoin acquisitions.

Executive chairman Michael Saylor confirmed that STRC now leads the portfolios of BlackRock’s PFF, Virtus InfraCap’s PFFA, and VanEck’s PFXF. This shift marks a notable transition in ownership dynamics: while retail participation dropped from 78% to 71% between March and July, the average institutional position expanded by 105% to $3.5 million. Strategy CEO Phong Le maintains that this institutional influx validates the company's digital credit products, even as the market price remains disconnected from the intended par value.

The persistent discount to $100 creates a strategic bottleneck for the firm, which relies on issuing new preferred shares to fund its Bitcoin treasury. CEO Phong Le indicated that the company intends to resume issuance only once the stock returns to par, as selling at current levels would yield less capital per share. While the company offers a 12% annual dividend to incentivize price stability, the stock closed at $86.89 on July 24, leaving it well below the threshold required to trigger new expansion efforts.

Skepticism remains regarding the nature of this institutional accumulation. Bitcoin critic Peter Schiff suggested that the increased holdings may reflect complex spread trades—such as shorting common stock MSTR or hedging against Bitcoin—rather than a direct bullish bet on the underlying assets. Meanwhile, the company has already demonstrated the sensitivity of its treasury to these market constraints, having sold 3,588 BTC earlier in July to cover liquidity needs and dividend payments. Despite recent listing expansions on platforms like Binance, the market has yet to provide the price recovery necessary to restart Strategy's preferred-share-funded accumulation of Bitcoin.
