Democrats Secure House Majority, Eyeing Trump Family Crypto Empire

With control of the U.S. House of Representatives secured in the 2026 midterm elections, Democrats are preparing to deploy subpoena power against President Donald Trump’s financial interests. Incoming Oversight Committee chair Robert Garcia has signaled an aggressive investigative campaign, specifically targeting World Liberty Financial and the family’s broader business dealings.

The shift in legislative power grants Democrats the authority to bypass White House cooperation, setting the stage for a confrontation over the Trump family’s cryptocurrency ventures. Lawmakers are zeroing in on a $500 million investment in World Liberty Financial by Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE’s national security adviser, which granted his investment vehicle a 49% stake in the firm. This arrangement has drawn scrutiny due to the company’s ongoing efforts to establish a federally regulated trust bank for its USD1 stablecoin.

Beyond specific crypto transactions, the Oversight Committee plans to scrutinize over $725 million in government loans, grants, and defense contracts awarded to companies linked to Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump. Garcia, who issued a blunt "Lawyer up" warning following the election results, intends to examine potential conflicts of interest and foreign ownership arrangements that were previously shielded from formal congressional inquiry. While President Trump has vowed to veto Democratic legislative efforts, the committee’s investigative reach remains independent of his executive authority, allowing for the potential issuance of subpoenas as early as February 2027.
