Nigeria Nudges Oil and Gas Output Higher Amid Infrastructure Hurdles

Nigeria’s state-owned energy company, NNPC, pushed its total oil and gas production to 3.04 million barrels of oil equivalent per day in September, marking a modest climb from the previous month’s 3.01 million boepd as idled fields returned to service.

The uptick in output follows the restart of the Obodo oilfield, situated within mining license OML 150. Despite this progress, the state firm reported that total production remains stifled by a persistent cycle of facility failures, flowline leaks, and community-led protests. These operational bottlenecks, coupled with storage constraints and recurring damage to export infrastructure, continue to prevent the country from fully capitalizing on its resource base.

Financial returns remained steady at $3.4 billion, reflecting a consistent revenue trend observed since March. While the country has successfully navigated past years of systemic theft and sabotage in the Niger Delta—recently hitting a 15-month crude production high of 1.53 million barrels per day—long-term ambitions remain tethered to infrastructure stability. Executive vice president for upstream Udy Ntia has set a target to reach 2 million barrels per day over the next two years, contingent on overcoming the ongoing reliability challenges that frequently force unplanned downtime across the network.
