Off-Grid Solar Becomes Primary Power Source for Millions

Nearly 400 million people living without electricity now find off-grid solar to be their most affordable path to power. A joint report from the World Bank and GOGLA confirms that these systems have evolved from temporary stopgaps into reliable, long-term infrastructure capable of supporting both households and commercial enterprise.

The transition requires an estimated $11.4 billion investment between 2027 and 2030 to reach these populations. This capital mix includes $1.3 billion annually in grants and subsidies alongside $1.6 billion in debt and equity financing. The sector has already demonstrated significant economic utility, supporting over 219,000 jobs and enabling 7.4 million people to generate an estimated $28 billion in income and savings through microenterprises.

Global adoption is fueled by a dramatic collapse in hardware costs, with Chinese-made panels falling to 12 cents per watt from highs of $6 at the turn of the millennium. This shift is particularly visible in Africa, where the continent is on track to install a record 17 gigawatts of capacity in 2026. India is seeing similar momentum, with its PM Surya Ghar program targeting 10 million households, having already reached over 5 million installations by mid-August. In Pakistan, high grid tariffs are driving a consumer-led shift toward solar, with industrial players like Bestway Cement integrating large-scale arrays directly into manufacturing facilities to bypass national power instability.
