BNB Chain Unveils High-Speed Layer 1 Strategy

Binance founder Changpeng Zhao has endorsed a proposal for a new high-performance Layer 1 blockchain that avoids a secondary token, keeping BNB as the primary asset for gas, staking, and governance across both the existing Smart Chain and the upcoming network.

BNB Chain Unveils High-Speed Layer 1 Strategy

The project, currently referred to as New L1, aims to solve latency issues by targeting 200-millisecond block production and 20-millisecond transaction pre-confirmations. By separating transaction ordering from execution, the architecture allows validators to maintain throughput without waiting for complete processing cycles. The network will utilize a Multi-Lane mechanism to reserve capacity for specific high-frequency activities, such as decentralized order books and payment services.

While the blockchain maintains EVM compatibility, it introduces native account abstraction and a shielded pool for privacy-focused transfers. BNB Chain developers intend to bridge the new infrastructure with the existing BNB Smart Chain, allowing users to port assets seamlessly. Staked tokens on the new chain will generate govBNB, a non-transferable asset used specifically for governance participation.

Internal development is currently underway, with a public testnet scheduled for late 2026 and a full mainnet rollout targeted for early 2027. Despite these aggressive technical goals, the project remains in its infancy; the native bridge and privacy-focused security audits are still pending. This shift toward a parallel architecture follows a surge in performance-heavy activity on the network, which saw $25.6 billion in tokenized stock transactions during the third quarter.
