Middle East Crude Discounts Widen Despite Brent Price Surge

A sharp disconnect has emerged in global energy markets: while Brent crude futures climbed to a five-month high of $114 per barrel this week, the physical cost of Middle Eastern oil is sliding as regional producers ramp up exports through the Strait of Hormuz and offshore ship-to-ship transfers.

Middle East Crude Discounts Widen Despite Brent Price Surge

The cooling of physical prices follows a surge in supply reaching Asian buyers. Iraq’s Basrah Medium is now trading at a $10-per-barrel discount to the Dubai benchmark, a stark reversal from the near-parity pricing recorded just one month ago. This downward pressure is also evident in the Oman-Dubai differential, which plummeted to its lowest level since late July.

Market volatility remains driven by the widening gap between paper speculation and tangible supply. While futures traders react to geopolitical tensions and fears of potential transit disruptions, the reality on the water tells a different story. Producers have accelerated shuttle-shipping operations to bypass regional bottlenecks, effectively flooding the market with crude that was previously constrained. This increase in available volume has effectively decoupled the physical market from the panic currently fueling the price of Brent.
