The vote concluded on October 22, granting developers the mandate to explore a standalone architecture without authorizing an immediate departure from Ethereum. StarkWare, which abstained from the process, plans to release a draft whitepaper in November outlining the technical hurdles of such a move. While the network currently functions as a layer-2, its reliance on Ethereum for data availability and bridge messaging remains a primary security concern.
StarkWare’s roadmap aims for full quantum resistance by 2027, targeting vulnerabilities in elliptic-curve cryptography and current blob-based data systems. Transitioning to an independent chain would shift the burden of consensus and security entirely onto the Starknet ecosystem. The proposal confirms that STRK will remain the native token regardless of the outcome, and existing Ethereum bridges are intended to stay operational. Future decisions regarding an actual migration will require separate, binding governance votes.
