Cardano Foundation registers 100,000 Indian farms on-chain

The Cardano Foundation has hit a milestone of 100,000 registered Indian farms, leveraging the 5am.earth agricultural data project to anchor field information and sustainability history on the blockchain. The initiative aims to streamline fragmented verification processes for banks, insurers, and government programs by creating a verifiable, reusable record for each parcel.

The project, known as Swaminathan, operates across six districts in Maharashtra. It utilizes satellite imagery to verify land boundaries and combines this with 12 years of historical biomass and crop data. By anchoring these records on Cardano, the system allows farmers to grant third-party access to their data without compromising personal privacy. This approach targets the high costs currently associated with redundant farm checks by financial institutions and agricultural buyers.

Implementation involves a collaborative network, including Syngenta Foundation India, DigiFarm, and Zengate Global. A proposed pilot with Seedstars seeks to utilize this on-chain data to generate credit scores for farmers, with initial loans ranging from $100 to $500. While 100,000 farms are now registered, the credit component remains in a design phase targeting an initial cohort of 1,000 to 5,000 participants. To sustain this expansion, 5am.earth has submitted a treasury proposal requesting 10 million ADA over 18 months, with funding releases tied to specific operational milestones.
