Bank Negara Malaysia Unveils 24/7 Tokenized Securities Platform

Bank Negara Malaysia has launched SSDS+, a distributed ledger-based platform designed to manage the issuance and safekeeping of tokenized bonds and Islamic sukuk. By integrating this system with the real-time RENTAS+ network, the central bank now enables round-the-clock payment settlement using official central bank money rather than private digital tokens.

The new infrastructure modernizes the nation’s wholesale financial market by shifting securities recordkeeping to a digital ledger. While SSDS+ handles the depository functions, its direct connection to RENTAS+ ensures that payments for bond purchases occur instantaneously at any hour, effectively removing the constraints of traditional banking schedules. This development follows a series of digital asset experiments in the region, including a RM100 million tokenized sukuk pilot conducted by the sovereign wealth fund Khazanah Nasional earlier this year.

BNM Governor Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour stated that the integration creates a more flexible foundation for future financial instruments. Although the platform is currently built for wholesale markets, the central bank intends to eventually support corporate retail bonds. Despite the launch, officials have not yet disclosed specific transaction volumes or identified the first issuers to utilize the system. The initiative aligns with a broader push by the central bank to refine its policy on tokenized deposits and stablecoins, with further regulatory guidance expected to emerge from ongoing industry consultations by the end of 2026.
