UK bank customers lodge 10,000 complaints over crypto transfer bans

Over 10,000 complaints have been filed against major UK financial institutions by customers struggling to move money into cryptocurrency platforms. Data from a 90-day period reveals that even users attempting to fund exchanges registered with the Financial Conduct Authority face widespread transaction blocks and rigid payment caps.

UK bank customers lodge 10,000 complaints over crypto transfer bans

Lloyds Banking Group, Barclays, and NatWest account for nearly half of the grievances recorded between May and August 2026. Lloyds led the tally with 2,297 reports, followed by Barclays at 1,569 and NatWest at 1,278. The friction spans the entire country, with complaints originating from every one of the 650 parliamentary constituencies.

Institutional policies vary significantly, creating a fragmented landscape for retail investors. While Barclays and HSBC permit transactions up to £2,500, other providers like Starling Bank and Chase UK have implemented outright bans on crypto-related transfers. The report by Stand with Crypto UK highlights that even banks without official public restrictions, such as Revolut and Lloyds, have seen customers report failed transactions. Advocacy groups are now pushing for a shift away from blanket prohibitions toward risk-based assessments, arguing that current methods unfairly penalize users interacting with FCA-authorized platforms. This tension persists as the UK government prepares for a comprehensive crypto regulatory framework set to take effect in October 2027.
