Gold Holds Steady as Inflation Keeps December Rate Hike on the Table

Spot gold prices hovered near $4,172 an ounce in early Friday trading, bolstered by a retreating dollar and falling Treasury yields. While Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh signaled a potential pause for October, persistent inflation data keeps the pressure on policymakers to maintain a hawkish stance through the end of the year.

Gold Holds Steady as Inflation Keeps December Rate Hike on the Table

Market sentiment remains caught between the resilience of the U.S. economy and the stubborn reality of rising prices. September’s consumer price index climbed 3.7% annually, while producer prices jumped 1.3% in their largest monthly gain since March 2022. Energy costs, specifically a 10.8% surge in producer energy prices, continue to fuel fears that inflation could remain entrenched longer than anticipated.

Traders have adjusted their expectations accordingly. Following remarks from Warsh in Bangkok, the probability of an October rate hike dropped to approximately 15%, yet the likelihood of a December increase holds firm at 89%. This shift is further complicated by geopolitical instability in the Strait of Hormuz, where attacks on commercial vessels threaten global energy supplies. Despite these tensions, the International Energy Agency’s plan to release 100 million barrels of emergency reserves is providing a slight buffer against supply-side shocks.

Technically, gold bulls are focused on breaking the $4,201 resistance zone to initiate a move toward $4,230. Conversely, the metal’s downside support rests near $4,141. As investors weigh the impact of debt-financed artificial intelligence investments on bond markets against the haven appeal of bullion, silver continues to track industrial sentiment, trading modestly higher at $57.63.
