Circle Targets 40 Emerging Markets as Stablecoin Adoption Accelerates

Speaking from the IMF and World Bank meetings in Bangkok, Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire announced a significant push into 40 developing nations. The move signals a broader industry shift, as the stablecoin issuer prepares to move from early-adopter experimentation into a phase of global mainstream scaling.

The expansion focuses on regions including Southeast Asia, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East, where organic demand for digital utility continues to climb. Circle, which currently maintains roughly 25% of the global stablecoin market, is bolstering its growth through the $400 million acquisition of Tazapay and a $100 million strategic investment from Binance. Circulation of the company’s USDC token rose 19% year-over-year to $73.3 billion during the second quarter, buoyed by clearer regulatory frameworks such as the impending U.S. Genius Act.

Allaire argues that traditional banking institutions have lost their ability to gatekeep financial innovation. Major firms like BlackRock, Visa, and Standard Chartered are already utilizing Circle’s Arc infrastructure for cross-border settlements. Beyond human-led finance, automated AI agents are increasingly driving transaction volume by executing micro-payments for web research and data scraping. However, Allaire cautioned that this rapid integration of AI into financial systems introduces heightened security vulnerabilities, requiring providers to defend against sophisticated automated threats.
