Brooklyn Prosecutors and FBI Dismantle Eastern European Crypto Scam Ring

Brooklyn prosecutors and the FBI have shuttered 241 websites and seized 112 servers in a strike against an Eastern European network accused of defrauding Russian-speaking Americans. The operation, which followed a three-year investigation, targeted the underlying infrastructure used to facilitate multi-million dollar investment and recovery schemes.

District Attorney Eric Gonzalez stated that the scammers employed a dual-layer fraud model: first, by luring victims through Russian-language Facebook ads into fake investment platforms, and later, by masquerading as recovery agents to exploit them again. Investigators executed search warrants across three time zones, securing data that contained victim profiles, fraudulent software, and communications. By seizing the servers rather than just individual domains, authorities aim to prevent the operators from rapidly redeploying their infrastructure, a recurring obstacle in previous takedowns.

Assistant District Attorney Alona Katz, who led the Virtual Currency Unit’s investigation, noted that the operation effectively disabled the network's back end. While the office has seized approximately $300,000 in stolen funds thus far, the total losses are estimated in the tens of millions. The investigation relied on digital forensic evidence to trace assets that victims were pressured into transferring under the guise of fake investment advice. No arrests were made during this specific enforcement action, though the unit continues to pursue those behind the network.
