Gold and Silver Slip as Rate Hike Fears Outweigh Geopolitical Tensions

Spot gold and silver prices retreated in late U.S. trading Tuesday as investors pared positions ahead of Wednesday’s inflation report. While geopolitical friction near the Strait of Hormuz provides a floor for defensive assets, firm front-end Treasury yields and growing expectations for a December rate hike continue to suppress precious metals.

Gold and Silver Slip as Rate Hike Fears Outweigh Geopolitical Tensions

Gold traded near $4,160.80 an ounce, shedding 0.24% of its value, while silver saw a sharper decline of 1.82% to $59.090. The sell-off reflects a market caught between conflicting signals: safe-haven demand fueled by Middle East instability and the restrictive pressure of a hawkish Federal Reserve. Traders have priced in an 88% probability of a rate increase by December, keeping short-term Treasury yields elevated even as long-end yields show signs of cooling.

Equities mirrored this cautious sentiment. North American markets closed lower, dragged down by lackluster bank earnings and continued weakness in the chip sector. The S&P 500 slipped 0.1%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.3%. European indices followed a similar path, with technology stocks struggling to find momentum despite lower oil prices.

Looking ahead, the market focus shifts to the September Consumer Price Index. A cooler-than-expected inflation print could alleviate pressure on gold by easing real-rate concerns. Conversely, a hot reading would likely solidify the case for a December hike, leaving bullion trapped beneath technical resistance levels. For silver, industrial demand worries and a widening gold-silver ratio continue to amplify downside volatility.
