Polygon Burns 100 Million POL Tokens as Price Struggles Persist

Polygon has permanently removed 100 million POL tokens from circulation—roughly 1% of its total supply—yet the asset continues to trade near $0.10. While the network successfully executes fee-based burns, the reduction is currently being outpaced by ongoing token emissions, leaving investors to weigh supply dynamics against stagnating market demand.

The burn, confirmed by co-founder Sandeep Nailwal on October 11, was funded entirely by accumulated network fees rather than the project’s treasury. A further 22 million tokens are slated for removal, though no specific timeline has been provided. Despite these efforts, POL remains under pressure, having slipped from approximately $0.12 in late September to trade around $0.103 by mid-October.

The disconnect between token reduction and price appreciation stems largely from Polygon’s underlying economic structure. The protocol maintains a 2% annual emission rate to fund validator rewards and its community treasury, effectively minting roughly 200 million new tokens each year. Data from the POLTRACK dashboard highlights this imbalance: in the 30 days leading up to October 11, the network emitted 17.45 million POL while burning 13.23 million, resulting in a net increase in circulating supply.

While Polygon’s Open Money Stack (OMS) recently surpassed $1 billion in annualized processing volume, this growth has not yet translated into significant upward pressure on the token price. The OMS infrastructure, which recently integrated support for TRON-based USDT, focuses on cross-chain payment routing rather than direct POL consumption. Because transaction volume does not automatically equate to proportional fee revenue or increased buying activity, the market remains skeptical. Without a clearer mechanism linking payment infrastructure adoption to direct POL demand, the burn program continues to function as a modest supply stabilizer rather than a catalyst for a sustained price rally.
