Sui Foundation invests $30M to absorb DATA Network

The Sui Foundation has secured a $30 million stake in the DATA Network, positioning itself as the project's largest institutional holder as the protocol prepares to shutter its independent blockchain. The move marks a strategic pivot for DATA, which will migrate its infrastructure and token ecosystem directly onto the Sui network.

Under the agreement, the existing DATA token will transition to Sui at a one-to-one ratio, ensuring that governance rights and vesting schedules remain intact for current holders. While the independent blockchain will be retired, the DATA Foundation confirmed that its network will remain operational throughout the transition period. A formal schedule and migration instructions for users are expected to be released in the coming weeks.

Following the migration, the project’s Trace registry—which tracks the provenance of AI training data—will operate natively on Sui, utilizing the Walrus protocol as its default storage layer. The Trace system currently processes over three million receipts daily, with more than 250 million contributions logged since its launch in June 2026. This integration aims to link blockchain-based licensing with decentralized file storage, a combination that Sui leadership believes is critical for the future of regulated AI training models. Alongside the investment, SY Lee, CEO of PIP Labs, will join the Sui Foundation as a strategic adviser to oversee the project's integration.
